About the Town:

Beautifully situated on the River Avon, Stratford upon Avon is the home of England’s greatest playwright William Shakespeare. The small town is rich in heritage and culture, with impressive architecture and a unique collection of shops and restaurants. You can choose to view five beautifully preserved houses that offer you an insight into the life and works of William Shakespeare, including his birthplace and Anne Hatherway’s Cottage – the childhood home of his bride.

William Shakespeare, the Bard of Avon, was born in Henley Street, in 1564 on St. George’s day, 23rd April, and died on the same day in 1616, or so it is alleged – no records of births and deaths were kept in those days. However, we do have records of his baptism and burial, both of these events took place in Holy Trinity Church, a traditional Gothic Church on the banks of the river. His grave can be seen towards the rear of the church.

You can visit the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, which has recently undergone a £100m refit, the home of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Take in a performance, or maybe a tour of the theatre.

Hire a boat, take a pleasure cruise along the River Avon or see the town from an open top bus.

The River Avon
meanders it’s way through the town and a walk along the riverbank is one of the delights of the town, especially on a sunny day. You may find yourself quoting some lines of Shakespeare to passing ducks and swans, or just watching some of the many people who come to visit Stratford upon Avon, from all over the world, to pay homage to Shakespeare.
